Did Not Finish: Hope by Theresa M. Jones

by Theresa M. Jones

Allison now understands who she is and where she comes from, but will it be enough to save the world? She went through a dangerous journey, dragging her young daughter along for the ride, in an attempt to stop the evil Rising Leader, Damien, from opening the Seven Seals and bringing about the Apocalypse.

But she hasn’t succeeded yet. The Rising still thrives and Lilith has made it her mission to open the remaining Seals so that she and her minions can rule the Earth.

David and Allison hope that love can conquer all, but in reality, love is never enough. Will they, along with the rest of the gang back at the Compound, be able to stop the Rising?

And where is The Descendant that is prophesied to save them all?

Genre: NA Urban Fantasy
Publisher Type: Indie

My Rating: Did Not Finish

This one was a DNF for me.  I really enjoyed Power (Descendant Trilogy #1) though it too had some slow spots -- see my review here.  Where I normally will give a book 15% to grab my attention, I gave Hope over 30%.  The whole first section deals with the wedding of Allison and David.  It was very beautiful, but way too much.  I may have enjoyed this part better if I truly felt their chemistry.  I appreciated their developing relationship in Power, but it was the story of Power that really grabbed me.  Nothing much happens in the first third of the book outside of the wedding and honeymoon, with a few peeks into the Risings activities.  I am inclined to believe, due to the compelling story of Power, that later in the book there is a great adventure to be had, I just did not have the patience to get there.

Review: Arise by Theresa M. Jones

A Descendant Trilogy Prequel

Rick is an Order Member, which means he has inherited the Power of the Angels. Ann is now a single mother, as her husband died less than a year ago. Allison is an only child, now fatherless. But together, they make for an exciting tale of love and loss.

Rick is sent on a mission to bind Allison’s Power, but he got more than he bargained for as her mother, Ann, stole his heart in the process.

Read this prequel novella to find out more about Ann’s and Rick’s relationship, and to see how it all began before Allison turns 21 in Power.

Genre: Paranormal Romance (sweet, not steamy)
Publisher Type: Indie

My Review:
With prequels, it's sometimes hard to determine the best time within the series to read them.  For me, I love the surprise of the mystery unfolding; I hate spoilers.  Reading Arise first will give you a firm understanding of the Descendant Trilogy world, but does ruin the surprise that comes along of learning along with Allison in Power who she really is.  On the other hand, having read Power first, you do know how it will all end for Rick and Ann, at least for now.

I loved Power and was really excited to see the Ann/Rick relationship story told.  Indeed this is a sweet and subtle romance; it's not really paranormal in that, even though Rick is paranormal, none of the happenings of the book are truly paranormal.

Ann's a beautiful character.  I loved to see her grow past the heartbreak of losing her husband.  Her loss is handled so well in Arise and I appreciated that her feelings weren't just suddenly altered by the appearance of some uber hot man.  Instead she moves on in her own power, just with the nurturing of Rick.

All those good things being said, I must state a few complaints.  One is the information dumping we experience as Rick provides details on himself and his world.  Also, there's a lot of detailed description with the "telling not showing" clearly present.  Overall, the pacing was very slow due to these issues combined with the nature of most romance stories to be slower paced.

Blog Tour with Excerpt and Giveaway: Renegade by Cambria Hebert

Hi!!! **Waves Madly, Jumps Up & Down**
So excited to continue on with news about
Renegade, the final installment of the Heven & Hell series.
Today is my stop on the Renegade Blog Tour
and I have some great fun & games planned for us.
First we will take a look at the book du jour,
followed by a tasty excerpt and a GIVEAWAY!!!
Woot Woot!!!

So here it is....

The conclusion to the Heven and Hell series.

I’ve been beautiful. I’ve been ugly. I’ve died. I’ve been brought back. I’ve had abilities awakened within me. My strength has been tested. My beliefs have been tested.

Yet I stand.

What’s next when you’ve pretty much experienced it all?

The end.

Sam and I are picking up the pieces. We’re trying to come to terms with all we’ve lost. And as much as I would like to hide my head, ignore the reality I live every day, there is no forgetting.

Riley is in hell—I’m still not sure of his agenda. My mother’s past haunts me. And Kimber… Kimber is being herself. Cole sneaks glances at Gemma and she returns them when she thinks I don’t see.

But I do.

When Beelzebub escapes he brings his war to places I never thought he would. Earth. Maine. Home. Now everyone and everything is at risk. This has become bigger than my circle of friends. This has become bigger than me. I have to finish this. I have to find a way to stop him, to finish this war.

I just pray we will all be left standing in the end.

A very special ... and SUPER SMOKING ... sneak peek from Heven's POV:

Heven
Sam stepped around me and held up what he ran to grab. He pressed the button and white foamy spray shot out and covered the trees. The air instantly began to cool as white spray floated around, sticking to the now blackened tree branches and reminding me of snow.
When all the burning ceased, he dropped the red can and turned to me.
“What does it say about me that my boyfriend hauls a fire extinguisher everywhere we go?” I asked.
“That you’re really hot?” he said. I swear there was a hint of a smile on his lips.
“Ha-ha.” I sighed and looked back at the mess. “I tried to stop it.”
“Don’t be so hard on yourself.” He said, wrapping an arm around my shoulders.
“Easy for you to say. You don’t light everything on fire when you’re upset.”
“No, I just morph into a hellhound and run off into the woods.”
A giggle escaped my lips, but then I frowned. It really wasn’t funny. Sam had really great control, but he’d been “disappearing” sometimes lately, and now I knew why.
“But at least I don’t have a potty mouth,” he continued.
“I do not!” I protested.
“I heard what you said a few minutes ago,” he teased.
I sighed. He laughed.
It was a real laugh and it made me do a double take. I hadn’t heard him laugh like that in weeks. Something inside me lightened a little bit.
I reached up and cupped his face. “There’s a sound I haven’t heard for a while.”
“I guess your naughty behavior brings it out of me.” He lifted an eyebrow.
“Well, then perhaps I should be naughty more often.” I pressed my lips lightly against his, and he hooked his arms around my waist and pulled me closer. The front of my body was completely against his without an inch to spare between us. His lips were warm and pliant and they molded themselves to mine in a way they hadn’t in weeks.
God, could that boy kiss. He had a way of stamping out every thought, every whisper, every single thing around us until there was only his lips upon mine. I threaded my fingers through his hair, knotting them in, taking up residence and meaning to stay, when he pulled me away from him and looked at me. He was breathing too hard to speak and his eyes were glittering like the sun. I delved my hands deeper into the tangles of his hair, trying to snatch him back, but he shook me.
“Hev,” he rasped and his voice scratched over me, leaving goose bumps in its wake. How was I supposed to think when he sounded like that?
“Heven,” he said again when I didn’t respond. “We’re on fire.”
Yes. Yes, we were. “I like fire,” I murmured and tried once more to pull him close to me.
This time he untangled my hands and grabbed my wrists. “No, literally. We’re on fire.”
I followed his gaze down.
“Crap!” I yelled and began stomping my feet.
My shoes were practically gone and the ankles of Sam’s jeans were glowing as the fire burned up toward his knees. I dropped down and began slapping at the flames on his legs, making gasping sounds when parts of the fabric came off in my hands.
Finally, I got the flames out and stood, looking down at the damage. My shoes were half melted and Sam looked like a pirate with his jeans completely burned away to his shins, leaving the ends blackened and frayed.
I looked up. “I caught you on fire.”
His lips twitched.
“I caught my boyfriend on fire.”
“I guess it’s a good thing your boyfriend is flame retardant.”
I groaned, but then it turned into a laugh.
And now onto the giveaways!!!
If you are in the US....

And if you're an international friend....

and don't want any book 1 spoilers,
stop here and check out my review of After Dark instead.

Ready? Me too!!!
He’ll be here any moment…knock, knock …
**happy dance***, here he is!!!

Hello, Winn! So nice to meet you; thanks for coming by Known to Read. Can I get you anything? Coffee?

No thanks, I’m good. And thanks for having me.

You're welcome!  So glad you could come!!!  I’ve got to say, the events of After Dark left my head spinning. I can’t imagine how you coped with it all.

Coping and dealing ... well, I think I might still be in the middle of that.

Are you ready to share with us some of your impressions of those events?

Impressions? Well ... hmmm... Getting to know the real Mac was a big surprise. I mean who thinks their girlfriend, or even a girl friend, someone that you’ve known about for years, is anything but the human you think she is? I mean, that’s a big shock.

No doubt!  Why don't you tell us about where and when it all began? Halloween. You seemed a bit stand-offish with Mac at first. What were your impressions of her before you got to know her?

Standoffish? Yeah, you could say that. I didn’t really want to get involved with her. I mean she was, and still is a lot of times, snide and selfish, but she’s got a side I never really thought possible. I mean, actually, two - since she’s a Changeling and all.

Tee hee hee.  Did she ever tell you her first impressions of you that night?

All I know is that she wanted my book. Who ever would have thought a book could bring two people together?

Kind of  romantic, if you ask me.  Granted that's coming from a book geek such as myself.  Tell us about your feelings and thoughts when you realized there was truly more than humans in this world.

I was so excited! I mean, think about it. We spend all our time thinking there has to be other types of life on earth and it’s there! It’s true! It’s awesome!

Were you ever frightened of Mac?

Do I have to admit that? I mean, I think I about wet myself when I saw her fangs dropped. Don’t tell her that though. She doesn’t need to know.

Your secrets safe with me.  I would have passed right out!  Let's talk about the contents of the book.  What “mythological” creature do you find most interesting?

Why does everyone ask me about my favorite? See, I don’t have to have a favorite. I can like them all. I’m partial to the magical realm, like the fairies and wizards, but I know Mac and magic aren’t always connected, so who knows about her. So I just like that I can know about them all!

Most frightening?

Nahir. That dragon. Errr.

If you, like Mac does, needed to choose a creature to become, which one would you choose?

No idea. Seriously. For me, I just want to learn more. I actually don’t mind being human, I just want to know that it all exists for everything. That would be my wish.

What were your thoughts when you went with Mac on New Year’s Eve to meet the council? My knees would’ve buckled right out of underneath me had I been in your shoes! Especially with Nahir!

At first, I thought I was fine, seriously, until they took me out of the room and didn’t tell me what was going on. It took them a while before Alina shared what they intended and I knew Mac would be ticked off.  Had to convince them to let me go in, even if something happened because I knew she’d get mad and do something rash. Which she did. I am glad though, that she did what she did, you know?

Tell us what was happening with you that night while Mac was “doing battle” with the council members?

Hanging out. Talking to Alina. Waiting. Asking more questions. Waiting. More questions. It seemed like it was taking forever, when I finally got her to tell me what they planned to do and why.

How do you feel about Mac naming you her teacher? Do you feel up for the challenge?

I was shocked. Seriously. Then I didn’t think they’d let me. As for being up for the challenge? No way. I don’t know anything, but look at Mac. She’s part of that world and doesn’t ask all the question I’d be dying to ask, so I’m kinda glad because now I get to know everything I ever wanted!

Well, Winn, I sooo appreciate your taking the time to be with us today. It’s been quite enlightening!

You’re welcome and thank you!

That was incredible, huh???
Wanna know more about Day After now, don't you???
I so knew you would.
So here's the run down of the book (that was just released this week)
and my thoughts on it....

Demon crypts. Vampire lairs. Glowing angels. Sexy sirens. The stuff of fiction.

Or so Winn Thomas always thought.

Since being accepted into the fold of the supernatural, he knows better. None of what he imagined is true, but everything he feared is, and binding himself to his Changeling girlfriend until her nineteenth birthday will give him an education far beyond what he’d get at his human high school.

Luckily, Winn’s not giving up, he won’t back down, and he definitely isn’t going to run away with his tail between his legs. After all, only werewolves have tails. Right?

In this, the second of the 19th Year trilogy, Winn’s facing the challenge of one lifetime. If he doesn’t learn the truth about mythological creatures, his girlfriend Mac Thorne won’t either. That means, in six months, when she chooses her final form, she won’t know what to pick.

Winn, though, has his own ideas about Mac’s final selection—plans she knows nothing of.

He intends to have her pick human.

Whether she can or not.

Genre:  YA Urban Fiction
Publisher Type:  Small Print/Indie
My Rating: *  *  *  *  *  * Yes, SIX stars!!!

My Review:
You know those books, the ones where you after you finish you want to start all over, because the're that good and you just don't want it to be over???  That's how I feel about Day After.  This book is so crazy good that I hardly know where to begin in my review..... so how to start? ..... well, I gave it six stars, an honor reserved for my very favorite of books.

Day After is written from Winn's point of view, a change up from book 1, After Dark, which is told by Mac.  I loved the change of perspectives from one book to another.  It gives a nice peek into each character while keeping the mystery quotient up by not flip flopping back and forth between character perspectives within one book.  And the mystery quotient in this book is huge.  There's so many twists and turns to this plot!  I had a constant inner monologue going of "Geez!  I so didn't see that coming?" and "What?!?!? No freakin' way!"  There were tons of surprises throughout this book.

I also really appreciate the creativity that goes into a work such as 19th Year series.  The world that has been built within is overflowing with unique supernatural characters taken from mythology world-wide.  Day After gives us so much more insight to these characters.  It's just so fun!!!

Now if you've read some of my other reviews, you'll know that I'm also a huge fan of character growth.  And again Emi Gayle hits the nail on the head with that here.  Winn's growth is subtle and nicely done.  Mac, even as we view her through Winn's eyes, sheds a bit of her rebellious and selfish ways.  Even the adult characters show growth.  **happy sigh**

Everything about Day After is a complete perfection in my eyes.  I just soooooo love this book!!!  Now I will warn you it's a pretty big cliff hanger we're left with at the end, but it's not the type that leaves you feeling irritated and incomplete; there's enough closure there to be pleased with the ending, but the end does leave you craving your next dose of the 19th Year!!!

So who's up for a giveaway??!!?!?
I thought maybe **big smirk**
Here it is!  Good Luck!!!!
